Selian is equally active in the community which surrounds the hospital. The hospital serves an immediate catchment area of 50,000
people. This is the core group in which we work to serve.
The Community Health Program consists of:
AIDS/HIV Program: Counseling, patient care, home based care, orphan care, and prevention.
Hospice: To reach out to those in the terminal stages of living with hope and grace and to relieve their pain and suffering.
Nutrition: To assist families with malnourished children to learn better ways of raising food and feeding children.
Tuberculosis: This scourge continues to grow together with the AIDS epidemic. The hospital cares for TB patients at a subsidized rate and follows up with family members.
Traditional Birth Attendants: Most women continue to deliver at home with the assistance of a Traditional Birth Attendant or TBA. Selian works with a group of forty of these women to develop their skills, improve their safety, and agree on cases to be referred to the hospital.
School Health: Children in school are a great resource and a great need. Health education provided to them will likely reach home. Many are also ill with parasites, anaemia, and malnutrition. Working with school children allows for healthier lives in the home.
Community Health Fund: The hospital has initiated a prepaid program by which employers and community members can purchase health care in advance at a greatly reduces rate. To date, 3000 members are in the prepaid program and some 5000 are in the guaranteed payment program.
